Xavier Garcia (PBA President): "The PBA is the way to save the basketball"
Xavier Garcia is the unique PBA 1993 survivor. He's the founder of this particular league, and the creator of the technology that will be able to change the way to work for coaches, players, general managers and scoutings.
Papua New Guinea Experience has done him a interview to trasmit the real meaning of the PBA.
PNGE: Hello Xavier. I think that you know that a lot of people have a question, and I have to do it. What is exactly the PBA?
XG: Hello, and I thank you the invitation to this interview. The PBA is not only a league with teams, players, games... The PBA is a concept, a new idea to understand the basketball, a new way to work for the basketball. The PBA is the unique class that has dared to merge american and european teams to compete for a title during 7 months. The NBA, FIBA and Euroleague created the Open McDonald's and the NBA Live Tour, but haven't gone more far yet. The basketball's world has to break with the fear and the NBA's supremacy over the rest of the world. The NBA is damaging the world basketball's clubs, because nowadays the players see the best future in the NBA, not in a club belonging to their native country. The best basketball is playing out of their country. The world has to break with this barrier. Some clubs as Joventut Badalona, Real Madrid, Panathinaikos, CSKA Moscow, or old Jugoplastika Split are some teams that are able to win the NBA title. The psychological abuse that Toni Kukoc received from some important players, as Scottie Pippen, during his NBA debut is a shameful image. The world has to do a step forward to allow to the players play against the best players of the world from their native clubs.
PNGE: How can be gotten this concept with 8 years (Xavier Garcia is 23 years nowadays), and only with Open McDonald's in the real basketball?
XG: Well, the age is not important really to make this concept. You're looking at Jordi Villacampa receiving NBA's offers, you're looking that Drazen Petrovic, Fernando Martín, George Muresan or Arvydas Sabonis chooses the NBA as their best option, forced to leave their native continent. You're looking at some canadian franchises, as Toronto Raptors or Vancouver Grizzlies becoming new NBA teams, and why can't other countries participate to the NBA season? The importance of this injustice can be felt by a 8 years' boy. The problem is when the competence of some adult people is lower than a simple boy.
PNGE: What is the reason to do public now a league that has been hidden during 15 years?
XG: The PBA 2008 season will be the first season with the Internet's power in the people's daily life. If the NBA, FIBA and Euroleague heads haven't been able to work 15 years later than a 8 years' boy, the basketball has a serious trouble.
PNGE: Which is the answer by the people that you're waiting for?
XG: Nowadays, FC Barcelona is receveing the consequence of the Juan Carlos Navarro's left. DKV Joventut's fans are nervious because they know that the best future for Rudy Fernández and Ricky Rubio is in the NBA, not playing in their club. This is a serious trouble. A lot of people is paying the consequences of the NBA's power over the basketball's world. The NBA controls all players and teams around the world, and it have to break with this authority. The basketball's fans need it.
